Leadership Academy Applications Open
Ever wondered why politicians do what they do? Ever wonder why city council seems at times to ignore the public during meetings? Ever wonder what al the different categories on your property tax bill mean?
The answers to these questions are more will be answered for participants of the third Southern Gila County Leadership Academy, slated to begin in September. Participants will be learning the nuts and bolts of government, local community groups and non-profits during the 10-week course, which will meet Tuesday evenings at the chamber of commerce, beginning Sept. 7. Some Saturday field trips are planned as well.
The Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce and Gila County are initial sponsors for the event, along with several corporate sponsors. Tuition for the class is $100 a students, and some scholarship aid is available.
“The Leadership Academy really gives you an understanding of how things work and why some things are done the way they are,” said Mickie Nye, chamber president. “The information from these sessions will be invaluable to anyone who wants to become more involved in the community.
Interested persons are invited to contact the chamber of commerce at 425-4495 for an application form. The application also can be downloaded for the website, www.globemiamichamber.com.
And in case you’re wondering about the questions at the top of this story…there is a good reason things happen like they do…come to the Leadership Academy and find out.

The Department of Corrections has Admitted to Security Lapses
This at the prison where three inmates escaped a little over a week ago.
The prison break has intensified the debate over private prisons in Arizona.
Convicted felons, for years have been moved to minimum security prisons after showing good behavior, which is how these recent escapees ended up in Kingman.
Because of the recent prison break, that process might be re-evaluated.

City Looses $24,100.00
in Cinco De Mayo
Events/Tex Mex Concert

The City lost $24,000.00 on the Cinco De Mayo events. That number could possibly be reduced by $8,000.00 when disputed tallies are accounted for. Booth rental, ticket sales, and beer sales brought in $36,221.95. After payment of everything associated with the events, there was a loss of $24,100.00.

There were some lessons learned and that next year there will probably be a scaled down major event along with the return of the smaller Downtown Cinco De Mayo celebration.
